This Best Western used to have a commanding view south over the ocean, but the recent Eko-Atlantic project extending Victoria Island out into the water has changed the shoreline into a level fill. Still, The Island Hotel is well-situated on Victoria Island and is an easy walk to Bar Beach as well as a few other points of interest.
Rooms here are very large, clean and modest, with decent air conditioning, cold stone floors, large bathrooms and hot showers fueled by on-demand heaters. Larger flat screen televisions pump out a dozen channels focused mostly on international news. Wired internet is free in each room, and a portion of the 94 rooms also receive a wireless signal – you’ll need to verify that when you check in though. In the worst case, it’s possible to connect wirelessly in the courtyard or the lobby, though the lighting in the latter is fairly dim.
There’s a mixed restaurant and bar that opens up onto the enclosed courtyard on the ground floor which serves a multicultural buffet dinner (4200 Naira), breakfast and lunch. Another restaurant is under construction on the roof with an unknown opening date, while the pool is also under construction and is planned to reopen in September of 2013. Wandering through the hotel it’s apparent that large sections of it are under repair, though the noise generated from that process isn’t really a bother within the rooms.
Several conference rooms are available for booking on the main floor while the top floor is large enough to host a few small event rooms overlooking the city. There’s also a business center adjacent to the reception desk, but it’s nothing more than a few desks in a secluded compartment.
