This Best Western is one of the larger hotels in Benin City. It’s about 20 minutes from the town centre, in a quiet, residential neighbourhood. It has a pretty impressive, almost classical frontage, replete with pillared alcoves. Inside there is a good-size lobby with stone floors, leather sofa clusters, and marble concierge desk.

Rooms are much larger than most in Benin City and there is a sense of space throughout. Rooms are simply furnished with a large bed, desk, minibar, safe, and a flat screen TV with 12 channels of DSTV (though no news channels). Though the shower pressure is poor, the bathrooms are generously sized and well equipped. The rooms are a little dated, but they do have some reasonable touches such as the ornate cornicing, and they don’t show many signs of wear. Being a relatively old hotel, it lacks any lifts. Hallways and stairwells can also feel a little gloomy, especially during the frequent power cuts.

There is a small gym (though not very well equipped), two conference rooms (catering for between 100 and 1000), a relaxed lounge bar, a more formal restaurant, and a large pool and poolside bar. The pool area is easily the best part of the hotel. It’s a standard-length pool flanked by a terracotta-tiled terrace and it’s a pleasant spot to sit with friends or dine. It proves more popular than the restaurant, and it’s here that the majority of guests choose to relax in the evening. Staff are available, if not overly friendly, and service is efficient.
