Hotel Of the Week: Fundu Lagoon, Pemba Island, Tanzania

Pemba Island, just north of Zanzibar, is slowly becoming the new enticing destination in Tanzania. With a population of only 300,000 people and only a small number of visiting tourists every year, this relatively pristine island does not have a plethora of accommodation options.

One of only two top-end lodges found on Pemba, Fundu Lagoon is as romantic as you it gets when it comes to all-inclusive island escapes.

Everything in the lodge blends effortlessly into the jungle surrounds, which embodies shabby African chic at its beach-bum best under sweet-smelling thatched roofs. There are various room options, from the standard all the way to the astounding superior luxury tented suites complete with private plunge pool, outside lounge area, and private access to the lagoon waters.

fundu-lagoon-resortThe lodge’s layout means that you will often find private little jungle nooks to relax in peace and quiet. Sunset cocktails happen on the lagoon jetty lounge, and a unique horizon pool sits high up in the forest canopy. Be aware that the mosquitoes in the jungle are relentless in the twilight hours, so have appropriate protection.

If you are able to tear yourself away from the resort, the on-site dive center can arrange in-water activities like diving, snorkeling, and kayaking. These are all easily accessed via the diving concierge who meets with you every morning. There is no beach nearby as the lodge faces onto the lagoon, which is perfectly decent to swim in, but is rather shallow.

Nothing is too much for the staff to handle, and they go above and beyond to make your stay as private and relaxed as you wish. Fundu Lagoon is an unforgettable getaway that will leave you nothing but beautiful memories and well worth the island escape when you goals are to share tranquil moments with the people that matter to you most.
