Hotel Of The Week: Le Prince Maurice, Mauritius

Of the two Constance Hotels properties on the island of Mauritius, Le Prince Maurice is the one to head for if you’re seeking unadulterated luxury.

Situated on the east coast of the island, a short drive from the more family-friendly Constance Belle Mare Plage, this intimate resort is unique in offering two distinct styles of accommodation. The 88 suites and villas are strung around a gorgeous headland and vary between sea-facing suites that spill onto lush gardens and pristine sands, or over-water rooms that look onto the mangrove forests and a protected wetland. Décor throughout is modern, with a gentle Asian touch and plenty of mod-cons.

While the mangrove views are spectacular, it’s the beach-facing rooms that are best, particularly if travelling with children in tow. Although this resort is a hide-away aimed at honeymooners and romantics, children are welcome. A spacious kids’ club is tucked away in a quiet corner of the resort and boasts a large playground, attentive staff and a private swimming pool.

There’s plenty to keep kids and adults entertained here too: the well-equipped boathouse has the standard Mauritian trappings of sailing boats, kayaks (ideal for exploring the mangroves) and waterskiing on tap. Guests at Le Prince Maurice also enjoy complimentary green fees and club-car hire at the two Constance golf courses nearby. The spacious and airy U Spa is also a highlight.

In addition to the intimate atmosphere of the resort, fine dining is a major drawcard at Le Prince Maurice. Alongside the superb beachfront bar the resort offers three stylish restaurants. Archipel and Asian dish up superb continental and eastern cuisine, but it’s the over-water Le Barachois that stands out. Here, five floating pontoons offer truly unique waterfront dining and some of the best seafood on the island. None of the restaurants are particularly child-friendly though, so the early-bird kids’ menu in the bar is your best bet.

Although families are welcome, this is a resort best enjoyed with your beloved. For couples seeking perfect privacy and pampering there are perhaps few resorts in Mauritius offering a more luxurious experience.
