In the Zulu language, “shisa nyama” means “burn meat,” but in South Africa it’s also a term used to describe an informal barbecue or “braai” where meat is grilled on an open flame. Many places take it a step further and have created full-fledged restaurants around the concept, such as Imbizo Shisanyama at Busy Corner in Tembiso township, just north of Johannesburg.
Here you can eat dozens of different types of meat, sip on colorful cocktails, dance, and catch up with friends. Watch our video above, which gives the full flavor (pun intended) of this hugely popular shisa nyama, which has grown from a small shack to a giant, bustling complex over the last 18 years.
