Travel Tip Of The Day: Where To Ride An Ostrich In South Africa

It’s not the most conventional tourist activity, but if you’ve got a bit of an adventurous streak you can try riding an ostrich next time you are in South Africa.

The region around the town of Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo region is home to dozens of ostrich farms, many of which will take you on a tour, let you touch ostrich eggs, cuddle chicks, see how feather dusters are made, and yes, even climb aboard and go for a ride.

They generally only allow people who weigh underĀ 70kg/155lbs, and all riding is done at your own risk. Ostrich “jockeys” help you get on and off, and teach you how to hold on and how to fall off (if necessary) without hurting yourself. Riding does no harm to the birds, as they are large with powerful legs and sturdy frames.
