Where: Fundu Lagoon, Pemba Island, Tanzania. Pemba is one hop further from the mainland than Zanzibar, and as a result the number of visitors drops dramatically and the sense of adventure climbs considerably.
Fundu is the epitome of a barefoot paradise, with untouched and very beautiful terrain, forests and villages you can explore on foot, and myriad deserted coral islands you can sail, dive or snorkel. The resort has 18 rooms, consisting of canvas tents set under makuti (thatch) roofs on wooden decks, all with views over the sea. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans, and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each has an ensuite bathroom with fresh hot water shower, toilet and basin.
The hotel has a fully equipped dive center, and trips are available to nearby Misali Island with a pristine beach and superb snorkeling and diving. Dhow sunset cruises and canoe safaris through the mangroves are also available. Excursions around Pemba island can be organized.
