Slurp’s Up: Get Ready For The 2018 Knysna Oyster Festival

Oysters galore! South Africa’s Knysna Oyster Festival is making its annual appearance this winter from June 29 to July 8 along the Garden Route. Attendants will help themselves to the array of shellfish freshly harvested off the coast of Knysna. Throughout the 10-day festival, more than 100 activities are scheduled including fashion shows, live concerts, a color fun run, theatrical performances, hot sauce tasting and the Momentum BIG5 Challenge (competitive distance race that involves cycling, open water swimming, trail running, and more). The long-standing tradition in Knysna welcomes children with its designated Kiddies Area full of bounce houses, arts and craft stations, and much more. The Kiddies Area accepts children ages 2 to 12.

Wine is a big part of the Knysna Oyster Festival where there will be various wine tastings of local vino brought in from nearby wineries. Knysna borders the ocean and has a wealth of forest and mountainous ranges on its land, meaning several of the festival’s races such as the Knysna Cycle Tour will trek through the thick wilderness. Down below, the festival’s swim races will take participants through the lagoons. Each year, the festival’s list of sponsors continues to grow and currently has Pick n Pay, Momentum, Europcar, Knysna Tourism, Smart Shopper, Heinz Ketchup, Van Loveren and many more involved in the winter of 2018.

Multiple hotels in Knysna are offering deals and packages for out-0f-towners visiting specifically for the festivities including Protea Hotels and Pezula Golf Estate Bed and Breakfast Inn. Packages includes rides from the airport to hotels and bike storage for participating cyclists. Follow the detailed map here for approved parking areas where a shuttle can take you to the main entrance.
