Love is in the air this February 14th when Valentine’s Day arrives in South Africa. It’s that time of the year where your significant other hopes you’ll have something romantic planned up your sleeves. Don’t let this holiday pass you by with another boring last-minute Hallmark card and a box of chocolates from your local pharmacy. Instead, surprise your spouse or significant other by going to some of these incredibly romantic events that you can attend on this day of love. Here’s where you can spend your Valentine’s Day throughout South Africa.
Cape Town
Cape Town may be one of the best cities in the country (if not the world) for a romantic setting, thanks to its stunning nature of majestic mountains, rocky beaches and miles and miles of winelands. Consider Boschendal in Franschhoek (short drive outside of Cape Town) for a picnic under the stars. The winery is recognized for its picturesque garden where guests can enjoy a glass of vino and an incredible picnic spread of gourmet goodies. Live music will be played while lovers enjoy their surroundings in Rhone Rose Garden. Or try a picnic at another fantastic winery, Jordan Wine Estate. There, couples are invited to picnic on its lawn that overlooks the dam during sunset hours. Accompanied with your wine made right on the premises, couples can enjoy a luxury picnic spread of soft cheeses, Italian cold cuts, biltong, hummus, baguette, paté and more.
Or find a restaurant to be wined and dined with your spouse. Yizani Restaurant is a fantastic place for contemporary South African fusion fare and is doing a special for Valentine’s Day. Southern Sun’s Peach Tree Restaurant is another great alternative for couples who prefer a gourmet buffet featuring many Cape Malay fusion recipes.
Durban
For lovers that are in the Durban area, you have plenty of options as well to wow your date. Consider one of the area’s most luxurious hotels, The Oyster Box Hotel on Umhlanga Rock’s beachfront. The hotel is hosting its own Valentine’s Dinner Dance where lovers have the perfect excuse to dress up in their finest outfits and enjoy a six-course menu before hitting the dance floor. Not to mention, it would be an additional plus to book a room at the hotel for a convenient retreat to a cozy bedroom after a night of dancing. Or stay at the nearby Endless Horizons Boutique Hotel that’s hosting Valentine’s Day dinner with a prix-fixe menu of oysters, prawns, duck breast, seafood paella and more.
Johannesburg
Jozi has several romantic packages throughout the city for this special day, too. The Indaba Hotel is hosting a Valentine’s Day Dinner and Dance event where couples can choose from three packages; dinner and dancing, dinner and dancing with an overnight stay, or an overnight stay with an additional spa visit. During dinner, guests will be treated to a five-course meal and ladies will be given a single red rose to kick off the night. For guests staying overnight, don’t be surprised to return to your room after a night of dancing to find rose petals on your bed and a romantic champagne breakfast for two for the following morning.
For a romantic escape from the city, head to Mulderdrift that’s nestled in the Swartkop mountains. There, you’ll find Misty Hills Country Hotel, a luxurious retreat for an overnight stay and fine dining at its restaurant, Carnivore. But you’ll be there specifically for the Romantic Picnic and Movie on the hotel’s lawn. Expect a picnic basket filled with goodies and a bottle of signature wine to accompany you during movie night.
Plan a “staycation” by booking a room at 54 on Bath, one of the city’s most luxurious hotels with an elegant bar and a rooftop crochet ball field. Couples are invited to the hotel’s Level Four Restaurant for a five-course dinner of ribs, seafood, and vegetarian fare. For a buffet, opt for a Valentine Day’s meal at Garden Grill Restaurant that overlooks a landscaped garden.
