Zapata in Claremont serves some of the best Mexican food in Cape Town. Think big portions that are full of flavour for a good price, and that’s exactly what you’ll get at Zapata. The restaurant is described on their website as a “little Mexico” and there’s definitely a lot of atmosphere in the air. The staff are welcoming and accommodating as is the upmarket festive décor. A great selection of music makes for a wonderful vibe, and the cozy outside area is the perfect place for good food and cocktails in summer. The menu offers a variety of Mexican favourites and specialties, making it difficult to not want to order a few different things. For starters, I enjoyed fried corn fritters served with a creamy coriander dipping sauce. When my four golden brown fritters arrived, I wasn’t disappointed. They were light and crunchy and like nothing I’d ever tried before. The dipping sauce was a perfect match. Great for starters and great for sharing! For mains, I went with a classic and ordered “A Mountain of Nachos” which is served with spicy chicken, chili con carne or plain cheese. I love chili con carne and Zapata knows just how to make it! When my nachos arrived, it was clear that they live up to their name. If you’re in the mood for nachos, come hungry because it’s a real challenge trying to finish this monstrous portion of delicious tortilla chips, guacamole, sour cream and roasted chili salsa. I took half of mine home in a doggy bag and they’re even good when cold. For dessert, I just had to try the deep fried ice cream, as it’s quite a unique item on the menu. Definitely ask to hear the desserts of the day when you visit Zapata because you don’t want to miss out on these treats. If you’re a fan of ice cream, this is a must-have dish that’s served with either chocolate or honey sauce. I opted for the chocolate sauce but can’t wait to go back to try the honey. All in all, a delicious menu served with a great atmosphere in a relaxed, homely setting. Zapata also serves a great selection of cocktails and host live comedy nights during the week. It’s best to book if you’re planning on going during the weekend as this place can get pretty busy, and it’s easy to see why!
