I had high hopes for this sushi bar, located upstairs at Cedar Square in Fourways, but unfortunately it didn’t deliver.
The restaurant offers either sit-down table service with a menu, or seating at the sushi bar, which has one of those trendy moving conveyor belts where dishes are priced by plate color. In addition, there is an “all you can eat” plan, which I tried, but it really doesn’t offer all that much, in my opinion.
With all-you-can-eat theoretically you can get as many items as you want off the conveyor, plus a few appetizer choices and noodle dishes off the menu. However, the pricier plate colors are exempt from the plan, and the ones you are allowed to take are rather basic and boring: very dull rice and seaweed rolls, some without any fish at all. Management is clearly trying to keep costs down by only offering the “watered down” sushi to the all-you-can-eat guests.
Out of frustration I ended up ordering a couple of “not-allowed” items off the menu (and paid extra for them), and while they were delicious, they took forever to arrive. We did have a large group, but they knew we were coming (we had made a reservation days in advance), so you’d think they would have planned for larger volume!
The prices are reasonable, but it took a long time for everyone in our group to get our bill paid – almost as long as it took us to eat.
I might come back again to Yamazaki, but definitely not in a group, and I definitely will not go for the all-you-can eat plan.
