Situated in the heart of the V & A Waterfront I am surprised it took me so long to find this place. This is definitely my type of place, which as their website says uses local, artisanal products in all their bakeries, supporting producers who share their love of quality and integrity. With a mind-set such as this there is no question that this is a place that is bound to flourish.
If you want something a bit quieter than opt for inside, but if you want to do some great people watching then I’d definitely recommend sitting outside. It’s even quite entertaining at times.
Known for their breads they offer a selection of ciabatta, sourdough, rye, rustic, brioche and coconut loaves. All of these are included in many of the items on the menu but you can also buy bread to take home with you. We were there at lunch time and we spent a good deal of time trying to decide what to have because the menu is very big and everything looks good. We kept glancing around at what others had to see what we felt like, but everything looked good. The boys ended up going for the Bistro Beef Burger, which was topped with crispy gypsy ham, melted Boerenkaas and caramelized onions and served on ciabattini (big thumbs up from them). And the girls, being typical girls, went for the Roast Vegetable salad. This included mixed greens, butternut, aubergine, mixed peppers, red onion, toasted seeds, cashew nuts, Danish feta, a balsamic reduction and served with your bread of choice. It was massive and they didn’t skimp on the feta, which is always a bonus in my books. Definitely one of the best salads I’ve had in a long time.
They have another venue in Kloof Street and Steenberg as well as in Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban.
