Vasco De Gama Taverna is a great authentic Portuguese restaurant in Green Point that has been around for years and is well known amongst the Portuguese community of Cape Town and locals. The food is absolutely delicious if you’re in the mood for Portuguese classics like Steak and Egg, Espetada, Prego Rolls and Calamari Tentacles. The restaurant is old fashioned but host a lovely outside area where you can enjoy a lovely meal on a warm, summer’s evening. There is also the indoor pub area that is very festive. The food is pricier than you might expect, but the portions and flavours are well worth it.
For starters, I had the Chorizo sausage which is a traditional smoked Portuguese sausage, fried or grilled. Although presentation was average and nothing special, the Chorizo was incredibly tasty and authentic. The starter came with a whole basket of Portuguese rolls for the table which is a great perk and perfect to enjoy with your food.
For mains, I had the Portuguese Steak served with a Fried Egg, loads of chips and tons of delicious, spicy sauce. If you’re looking for an authentic Portuguese steak, this is the perfect place to taste exactly how it’s done in Portugal. For the size of the steak and the amount of sauce and chips on the side, the price is actually quite reasonable, but it’s also what you would be prepared to pay in an upmarket place.
For dessert, I only had one choice of ice cream and chocolate sauce. They usually have more on offer but I was unlucky and the restaurant was out of stock of the traditional Portuguese pastries that they usually serve. The ice cream and chocolate sauce was very average and a waste of time.
Vasco De Gama also serves daily traditional specials like Tripe and Beans, Osso Bucco and curry.
