As its name implies, Trump’s Grill is a place to go if you really, really love meat in all its forms. In fact, you’d have to go back several times just to try all the different cuts and types of meat on the menu.
Starting with burgers and chicken wings and going all the way up the price scale to top sirloin steak, the restaurant also offers regional and local meats such as ostrich fillet and game carpaccio, and seasonings such as peri peri and curry. But steak is the reason most come here: signature dishes include the melted cheddar steak and the pepper sauce rump steak, which are made from wet-aged Karan grain fed beef that is aged on the premises for 21-28 days. Oh and don’t forget the ribs, which can be ordered a la carte or as part of a combo.
In the event that you dine with a non-meat-loving companion, there are some seafood items such as peri peri prawns, calamari, and kingklip. The only truly vegetarian dishes are some of the starters, salads and side dishes.
I was not so adventurous and opted for the BBQ beef burger, which I was pleasantly surprised to find was neither under- nor overcooked. The barbecue sauce was not overwhelming, and the light, slightly crispy bun complemented it perfectly. The extra-thick chips were also nicely done. I washed it down with a draft beer, although I was tempted by the option of a chocolate shake.
Despite steak being the main attraction here, Trump’s does not have a “steakhouse” atmosphere. It’s not dark, nor smoky, nor full of pensioners; it’s rather generic, but breezy and friendly, probably by virtue of it opening right onto Mandela square. The clientele looked as if it was about 50% workers from the nearby offices, and 50% tourists passing through the square.
Service was prompt, and prices are fairly reasonable. Overall it’s a decent place to grab a bite if you’re in Mandela Square and find yourself having uncontrollable carnivorous cravings.
