There are three Toads in Cape Town, all the brainchild of partners Bob Skinstad and Dougie Boyes. There is the Toad in the Village, in Noordhoek, the Toad on the Road in Lake Side, and The Toad & Josephine in Newlands. The one I went to is the Newlands branch, situated right by the both the Rugby and Cricket stadiums as well as next to the SAB Headquarters. Due to this it can get extremely busy on match days, with people flooding out onto the street to find space.

It’s a great place to go on non-game days. Well for me at least, as I’m not a big fan of rugby or cricket. It’s has a proper pub vibe but offers a little bit of something for everyone. There’s the more ‘pub’ feel in the upstairs area, then downstairs has more of a ‘dining’ atmosphere, and then there is still the outside area which is very relaxed. We often just pop by for a glass of wine or a beer but if you want more than just drinks they also have a very nice food selection. They offer ribs, steak rolls, steaks, burgers, pizzas, fish, curries and salads. We’ve tried both The Josephine pizza (bacon, chicken, avocado, peppadews & feta) as well as the New Orleans pizza (BBQ base, chicken, bacon, mushrooms, sour cream, spring onion and sweet chilli sauce). Both were very big and very delicious. They even have the option of a half pizza and half salad option for those that want to be a little bit more on the healthy side.

It’s a very feel good kind of place where you can go in and enjoy a meal or sit with some friends to enjoy beer and the game on the big screen.
