Being the only restaurant on Table Mountain, you have to make reservations well in advance to dine at Tintswalo Atlantic, which offers a set menu and seatings for non-guests nightly. Its well worth the wait, as this is one of the most stupendous and unique dining experiences around Cape Town.
You’ll be escorted from the gates of the property down the side of the mountain in a house car, and from there you’ll be led to the back deck area off the main house. Built into the rocks just a few hundred feet from the water, the views of the Cape Peninsula stretch on in all directions.
If you’ve booked for a sunset seating it is especially romantic, as you’ll be served canapes and drinks at private tables (there are only a handful per seating) and watch the sun sink into the Atlantic. Afterwards, you’ll be led into the main house, which again consists of very well-spaced tables to make you feel as if you’re in a private dining room, and choose from a couple options on a five-course menu.
The food is superb, and the chef makes the rounds during dinner to make sure everything has been served to order. If you have special dietary restrictions, as my friend did, the staff accommodates effortlessly. It was nice to not have to return a dish to the kitchen because it was something she could not eat.
I also enjoyed the variety on the menu. I’m not a huge meat eater, so I was concerned there wouldn’t be much in way of choices for me with a limited menu, but I was delighted to start with a creamy soup, then follow with a delightful gnocchi dish and then go to a line fish choice for my main.
Expect to spend about three hours here for dinner. You’ll also want to dress semi-formal (it really is a great place for a romantic date). Also note the restaurant is quite far removed from Cape Town itself — if you take a cab from Camps Bay it will cost around R200 and you’ll need to tell the driver to take you to the start of Chapman’s Peak Drive. You will see the turnoff for the restaurant before the toll terminal.
