I almost missed this cute little place in the middle of Sandton City because it’s right next to an escalator near the banking mall, in a passageway full of people like myself — on their way to and from something else. But one day I caught a whiff of the amazing smell of baking bread emanating from the store and had to go investigate.
I discovered it’s part bakery, part deli, and part restaurant, so if you want to just pop in for a loaf of bread or some cold cuts, that’s one option, or you can sit in the café and have a salad, sandwich or coffee.
The bakery section has a massive selection of muffins, croissants, biscuits, cakes, breads, rolls, quiches, pies, meringues, and more. Great if you are on your way home at the end of the day and don’t have time to stop at the grocery store. They also do birthday cakes and other custom orders.
The deli offers cold salads and meats, soups, meatballs, cheese, antipasti and pre-made sandwiches. You can also get made-to-order sandwiches at the deli counter.
The café offers breakfast and lunch items. Their main business is in salads and sandwiches, but there is also a decent selection of light meals such as gnocchi, lasagne, and pizza slices. I’ve been several times and can recommend the chicken and avocado salad, the parma ham, mozzarella and rocket sandwich (pressed), and the smoked salmon and avo filled croissant.
Of course the drinks menu is extensive, and the menu includes a large selection of pastries to accompany your espresso, tea, freezo, or tizer. My only qualm is that the service is a bit erratic at times, probably when a new staff member is being trained. I ordered a hot chocolate on one occasion that I had to send back twice, because it came out tasting like coffee, not chocolate! But this is the exception, not the rule. Overall it’s an easy, breezy place to grab a quick meal and watch the people go by.
