Hopping out of the car on Goederust Farm, I was immediately hit with the comforting smell of freshly-roasted coffee. Not the sort you smell in a coffee shop, but something a lot more earthy than I’m used to.
Walking towards Terbodore Coffee Roastery, I could see this wasn’t a massive sort of operation. A small roasting room to the left of the entrance was stacked with cloth bags of beans, while the coffee shop to the right hummed with patrons, all drawn to the hot, sticky smell of fresh coffee.
Inside, there are only a few seats along the counter here, but that didn’t seem to deter the small crowd, all gathered for their morning fix. After going through Terbodore’s menu, I couldn’t resist the mocha listed on their fun barista’s guide and as soon as I ordered, I naturally seemed to drift to the roasting room.
Master roaster Jomo was busy handling beans, and explained to me the different varieties that go into Terbodore’s blends and then began the roasting process from start to end just in time for me to smell the steaming beans come out the roaster and get called to the counter for my coffee. I loved that I could be a part of the process of roasting and ask questions of a roaster! Definitely not something I’ve had the chance to do before.
Inside the café, there is a selection of pastries and baked goods, but I went with my all-time favourite, the chocolate brownie. It was fudgy and a little bitter and pretty perfect. Another fun thing here is that besides being able to buy your best coffee blend, there is a big selection of quality coffee accessories and paraphernalia available.
The space inside the actual roastery is pretty tight, so I headed outside and sat amongst the trees looking out over some gorgeous Cape Winelands views — the ideal spot to enjoy a coffee before a busy day of wine tasting. Also a great place to stop for a break from all the imbibing, if you should need it!
