Tasca is a Portuguese restaurant situated in the very popular V&A Waterfront. They have an amazing location space and should you choose to sit outside you can enjoy the gorgeous view of the harbour and table mountain. We were very excited to try this restaurant, firstly for the view, and secondly because their food sounded nice. We arrived on a very calm winters evening, with very little wind and we chose a wonderful table outside to make the most of it.
Then we got the menu.
I totally understand that this is a popular tourist spot and that the restaurants in this area are more expensive than normal. That is to be expected. However this one seemed completely aimed at tourists and not at those actually living in Cape Town. It really was far too expensive, and not justifiable. An example is a bottle of wine we spotted on the menu for R160 which we know is only R25 at the shops. I didn’t appreciate this. In the end we stayed for some wine (where we chose one of the cheapest bottles) and chose a starter to eat. I chose the Phyllo Rolls Tapas which was phyllo pastry filled with cheese and parsley and rolled like cigars, served with plain, fat free herb yoghurt. Once again very expensive for what you get, but admittedly delicious. I could easily have eaten an entire plate of this.
Overall my experience wasn’t great. I’ve been to far fancier places for cheaper food and I do not think they should forget about the fact that not everyone is from overseas. It’s a pity because the food did taste great and the location is perfect. Personally, I wouldn’t go back.
