I often order takeout from Chinese food restaurant Tai Ping located in Newlands, but this time I decided to visit the eat-in restaurant who hosts a different menu and what seemed like a good Chinese restaurant. At Tai Ping you can choose from set menus or pick your dishes off the eat-in menu. They serve a variety of duck, chicken, seafood, tofu and beef dishes.

For starters, I tried the Thai style spring rolls which were 4 tiny spring rolls that tasted like curry and weren’t very good at all. The paste inside was quite dry and I was expecting much more. I also ordered the Char Sui Pow, steamed mini BBQ pork buns. These hot and sticky buns were sweet and sticky but were very rich and instantly made me feel a bit ill. I also tried the Velvet Corn Soup which was thick and filled with chicken, egg and sweet corn. It was actually quite tasty and turned out to be the only dish I enjoyed all evening.

For mains, I decided to be adventurous and ordered the Honey Garlic Ribs. When they arrived they looked quite appetizing; bite-sized pieces of deep-fried ribs cooked in honey and garlic and served with fried rice. Unfortunately the ribs were extremely rich, sweet and crunchy and made me feel very sick after only trying one or two. I wasn’t able to finish my meal and didn’t want to take it home either. All in all, the evening felt like while a waste of money and I won’t be returning to Tai Ping, not even for takeaways. There was absolutely no atmosphere in the restaurant, even though there were a few tables eating in and the food was dreadful. Also, the bathrooms are situated in a dark, dodgy passageway outside of the restaurant and should really be upgraded. In fact, the whole restaurant needs a serious update!
