Like all worthwhile stories, this one starts with dessert. And not just any dessert but a bodice-ripping one: home-made peanut butter ice cream dribbled with hot butterscotch sauce. One word: ambrosial. I would suggest each person order their own, as sharing will lead to much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair.

This new kid on the Braamfontein block – an American-style BBQ joint – adds some old-school steakhouse grist to a  much-gentrified corner of Joburg. Only two short years ago, this area wasn’t much to write home about. But now it enjoys hipster footfall and on weekends you have to book a table or you’ll lose out.

Decor is exposed brick and beams – industrial yet at the same time homely. Must-tries include the jalapeño bacon poppers – piped full of cheese, swaddled with bacon and served with a blue cheese dip, it’ll send your taste buds into rapture, and your cholesterol-clogged veins straight to the doctor. But it’s so worth it. The pulled pork sarmie would have benefitted from a more pillowy bun, but the basting was smoky and rib-stickingly good. I like to think the creamy Carolina coleslaw upped my veggie quotient, but I reckon that’s denial talking. Other order-worthy items include the brisket (slow-cooked brisket, rocket, red onions all smothered in BBQ sauce and served on a panini with pickles and jalapeños) and the ‘Philly’ cheese steak (slices of sirloin, red peppers, melted provolone cheese, caramelised onions and garlic squished into a Panini).

This is one joint to keep your (rib)eye on.
