Back in my London days I used to frequent The Slug & Lettuce often, glugging down their famous snakebites and rubbing shoulders with mostly other South Africans and Australians. When I arrived in Cape Town I was surprised to find the same pub/restaurant available in a few different areas.  I’m not sure if the ones here are at all related to the London ones but it certainly has the same look at feel. Well, that’s except for the Newlands one, which is the one I’m here to talk about.

This one has a very different feel to the other branches, offering a bit more of a café bistro style vibe. It’s such a great place to go for something to eat and I enjoy it each and every time. Probably the only time I avoid it is when there is a rugby game on because then it becomes like more of a pub, with everyone around the bar watching the game on the screen. Which is great for some, but just not for me.

My favourite part about this place? They give you free popcorn to snack on, even if you’re only going for a cup of coffee. How sweet is that?! Sadly they didn’t do it the last time I was there, so I hope it hasn’t been stopped as I thought this was a very nice touch. Other than the coffee and popcorn, I have also been for cake and for dinner and enjoyed it each time I went.

For dinner I chose the The Cypriot Boy Pizza, which is bacon, feta, avocado, caramelised onion and garlic. Husband chose The Top Man Pizza, cured salami, peppadews, avocado and sliced chicken. The pizzas had thin crust which is great because you can eat the whole thing without feeling too full or gluttonous.

They offer some great specials so I would definitely phone to find out what’s on offer for that day.
