Scusi on Dean is a very clean, sleek and contemporary restaurant located in the heart of Newlands. The restaurant is very white, clean and fresh and evokes a sense of calmness when you are inside. The waiters were very friendly and I definitely felt relaxed being inside.

They are open from 6.30am which makes them a very popular place for those that can only make it early in the week days and from what I’ve heard their breakfast selection is very good and varied. They are also known for their good coffee which is always a bonus in my books.

I went for lunch and despite being a week day they were still very busy. I chose the Beef Tramezzini which is toasted pita bread with mozzarella cheese, marinated beef strips, grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms, chillies and tomato. This is called The Whole Beef Story. With that I chose the Rocket and Parmesan Salad which came with sliced pear and avocado with a balsamic dressing. Both were delicious, however with only a R10 difference between the two I have to say the salad is far too expensive for what you get. Luckily the taste was delicious but it was very small. The tramezzini on the other hand was huge. Slight inconsistency with the prices on their menu.

Being an Italian restaurant I would like to go back and try their pizza. There was one in particular that sparked my interest – The Ooh My Pizza. This is a tomato, mozzarella, roasted butternut, feta, caramelized onion and chorizo. This is part of their gourmet range. They also offer classic pizzas as well as grazie mille. The grazie mille is a decadent pizza base with gianduia chocolate spread, flaked almonds and creamy mascarpone cheese. Wow.
