Since this restaurant is rather new I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I hadn’t heard any feedback from colleagues or friends. But I was pleased to find that the food and ambiance at Royal India lived up to its name in both atmosphere and cuisine.
The high-ceilinged dining room features colorful murals depicting scenes from Indian legend and history, with dreamy princesses and courageous princes. The diamond-studded ceiling panels and silver and gold drapes contrast nicely with the dark brown leather-bound chairs and deep burgundy tablecloths. Overall it has an air of elegant sophistication, marred only slightly by the weird electro-synth Hindi music playing in the background.
The menu is heavy on traditional northern Indian classics, with a few south Indian and Goan dishes sprinkled in for good measure. My chicken tikka appetizer had just the right amount of spiciness, and was extremely succulent and juicy. I also ordered the prawn and chicken curry with basmati rice, a house speciality, and was wowed by the presentation – in an ornate silver serving bowl – as well as the depth and breadth of the flavor. The garlic naan accompaniment was the perfect blend of chewy and moist.
The dining room was a little empty when I visited, but it was mostly Indian folks, which I took as a good sign. If it passes muster with those who know Indian food, Royal India should be on its way to great success in the future. The fact that prices are very reasonable should help too.
