Rock Sushi Thai is a hidden southern suburbs spot that you should definitely check out if you’re in Cape Town. The upmarket restaurant has stunning modern décor and a huge menu with great lunchtime specials. They serve authentic Thai meals as well as freshly made sushi, plus a selection of Belgian and local craft beers that are perfect for after-work drinks or lazy Saturday afternoons.
I started my meal with the pork dim sum, after having some trouble deciding what to order: everything looks so tasty that it’ll take you a while before to settle on a dish. The dim sum was moist, flavoursome and delicate. One portion includes four pork dumplings, and you can also choose from fillings such as pork & prawn, chicken and vegetable. The dipping sauce they came with is salty, sweet and simply delicious.
For mains, I couldn’t decide between sushi or Thai, so I decided to try both. First I ordered the Kyoto sushi platter, which includes 17 pieces of sushi, fashion sandwiches, California rolls and nigiri sushi. The freshly made rolls definitely hit the spot and although I wouldn’t say it was anything to write home about, it was pretty decent. I do have to mention that their sushi is quite pricey, so if you’re looking for a cost-conscious meal, I’d recommend ordering a Thai dish instead.
I tried the pad Thai next. Pad Thai is a favourite of Asian cuisine lovers, including me. I’ve enjoyed this dish at a few restaurants in Cape Town but I have to say that Rock Sushi Thai serves the best. It’s absolutely delicious! I ordered the chicken pad Thai, but it can be served with pork, prawn or veg and tofu. What really made this dish delicious was the delicate flavours and the home-made sauce. Yum!
If you’re looking for an upmarket place with great Asian cuisine in the southern suburbs, Rock Sushi Thai is a great bet. I would recommend taking advantage of their lunchtime specials or visiting them for a delicious dinner.
