Randlords is a strong contender for Joburg’s best bar with a view. On the 22nd floor of a Braamfontein building, Randlords has a massive outdoor deck on two levels with 360-degree panoramic views over Nelson Mandela Bridge and the city to the south and the treed suburbs to the north. Sunsets here are amazing, the golden light softening the high-rise buildings, highways and railways below you, but dusk is even more spectacular, as the city lights come twinkling to life.

Named after Johannesburg’s diamond and gold mining magnates who lived the city’s most opulent lifestyles at the turn of the century, Randlords is no less upmarket and luxurious. The look here is contemporary porno-chic, with lots of white, black and leather, faux-fur rugs and beaded swings hanging from the ceiling. Inside the spacious venue is a gleaming black bar, seats at the windows overlooking the view, and sunken couches. Bathrooms are equally chic and glamorous, with floor-to-ceiling windows, fur rugs and swings. Where you really want to be, though, is outside (if the weather’s warm): choose your spot from bar stools and tables, comfy couches, or huge four-poster day beds for the ultimate cocktail-in-hand reclining look.

Sip on a snazzy signature cocktail such as pink martini, choc-mint martini, or a summer cup – ginger liqueur with smashed strawberries, lemons, cranberry juice and lemonade, or go full bling and order one of the bottles of pricey French champagne. When in Rome, right?

Randlords is open mainly for private functions – this is where the city’s hip, moneyed set have their birthday parties and corporate launches (and weddings) – but the bar is open to the public, with DJs or live bands, once a month.
