Plant is a nearly established vegan restaurant that’s just relocated to Loop Street, very close to Long Street and right in the hustle and bustle of the city. They believe in using plant-based materials to created tasty dishes that keep their vegan regulars happy and healthy. They serve a selection of foods and products that fit in with a vegan and vegetarian lifestyle. My favourite part about Plant is the complimentary water you receive on arrival which is a great way to start any meal and helps you stay away from sugar-filled cool drinks. They have a great selection of smoothies, pressed juices, craft beer and wine and gluten-free breads to enjoy and make up some great dishes to enjoy inside or outside on a nice sunny day.
For starters, I had the Nachos served with a melted cheese substitute, guacamole and salsa. The nachos are served on a bed of black beans and are great to share. Although it tastes a lot more “planty” than regular nachos, it definitely offers its own flavours that are appealing and tasty nonetheless. The vegan cheese has a unique taste and consistency but if you’re not afraid to try new things, you’ll definitely end up enjoying this one!
For mains, I ordered the Eggless Egg Salad Triple Decker sandwich which was amazingly tasty beyond belief. The blended tofu and mayo mixture tasted a lot like egg mayo and their unique mixture of nutritional yeast, mustard and turmeric added so much flavour to the sandwich. The sandwich was dressed with onion and sprouts on sourdough, ciabatta or rye.
For dessert I had to try the popular Cupcake of the Day which was moist, tasty and much healthier than your usual cupcake. All in all, I had a great time at Plant in town and I think you will too.

It’s great to have a vegan restaurant in Cape Town and I think it’s become very popular with the locals. Admittedly, I’m not a vegan, but I absolutely love eating as much fresh, plant-based food as possible, and who knows maybe one day I’ll change. Its places like this that are needed here so that we can all be educated about creating a more sustainable life on earth. A percentage of all their profits are donated to human-based or animal-based charities, in order to make the world a little better and a little kinder.
Situated in the very vibey Buitengracht Street, it can be a bit tricky to find parking, but although I parked quite far it was a nice walk so I didn’t mind at all. The venue is small but very open and airy so you don’t feel at all claustrophobic. They have quite a wide selection on offer such as different sandwiches, wraps, burgers, salads, ‘bowls & boxes’ (and yes, this is ALL vegan), as well as a good selection of cake. They offer different juices, smoothies and hot drinks too.
I went for a glass of delicious freshly squeezed orange juice followed by their protein salad. This consisted of quinoa, marinated crumbled tempeh ‘bacon’, chickpeas, rocket, sprouts, seeds, nuts, sundried tomato and cucumber with a miso ginger dressing. I loved it and I felt satisfied without feeling heavy, which was a welcome change. I couldn’t leave without trying one of their cupcakes and was surprised at how delicious a vegan cupcake could taste, especially when peanut butter is involved.
I would definitely go back and I hope more places like this start opening in the area. It’s a refreshing way to have a meal.
