Perc Ferme is a casually elegant eatery connected to the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton City, opposite the Sandton Convention Centre. The stylish interior grabs you as soon as you enter: black leatherbound chairs, textured tablecloths, candles, light maple paneling and red accents percolate throughout the length of the restaurant, which spills out onto the patio.

Thought the restaurant’s specialty is officially Mauritian food, in reality it’s only got a few Mauritian dishes. The wide-ranging menu offers a lot of international fare, with steak, lamb and chicken dishes featuring prominently. Seafood also plays a big role, with king and queen prawns, oysters, and mussels, and caviar (R4500) on the roster. There are also pasta dishes, sushi served in large wooden boats, and fantastic looking desserts.

Warm bread and spicy lentil soup (served in a tiny espresso cup) set the stage for the amazing meal to come. I ordered the chicken breast stuffed with feta, spinach and apricot, which was served with couscous and vegetables. The veggies and chicken were nice and tender, but the whole dish maybe could have used a sauce. I also tried the prawn and butternut tortellini, which was positively divine — one of the better mains I’ve had in Joburg. For dessert I tried the chocolate and nut-filled samoosas with mint vanilla ice cream and butterscotch rock candy art. It was a bit of a letdown – the samoosas were tasty, but did not have as much filling as I was expecting.

Despite this place’s fancy menu and upscale décor, the attitude and clientele were fairly casual – we saw our share of t-shirt-clad men and jeans-clad women, mostly in the bar area, where you can chill and listen to the music if you’re not in the mood for a full sit-down meal. It’s got a huge selection of liquors and wines.

The night I went there was a live cover band playing contemporary pop hits. It was a little loud, but definitely fun, and it created a festive atmosphere. The service was good and prompt as well, but not overly friendly from the wait staff. The executive chef however personally came out to inquire whether I was satisfied. To which I gave him a resounding “yes.”
