The Ocean Basket is known throughout the country and throughout Africa as a great family seafood restaurant that offers value for money, reliable food and reasonable service. In fact, it was voted as South Africa’s most loved seafood restaurant. I visited the branch on Sea Point Main Road to see if the food is still as good as I remember. Ocean Basket has a great kids meal and is always lively and atmospheric, just like a true Greek kitchen.
For starters, I ordered the Haloumi Cheese. When it arrived, the Haloumi Cheese was burnt and unappetizing. I also ordered extra bread for the table while I waited for my main meal which came with a charge, so be aware in case you make the same mistake.
For mains, I ordered the Platter For 1 which included 3 mussels, 6 prince prawns, the catch of the day, calamari and calamari heads. I upgraded my catch of the day to open cooked fish instead of battered and fried, which also came at an extra cost. The Platter For 1 was tasty, tender and enjoyable. Every aspect served on the platter has that signature ocean basket lemon and butter flavour and I would definitely order it again. If you’re in the mood for a bit of everything, try out one of Ocean Basket’s great platters.
For dessert, I thought I’d try the Baklava which is a classic Greek dessert of pastry and syrup. It was flaky, sweet and came with vanilla ice cream. Although the portion was rather small, it satisfied my sweet tooth and ended off a delicious seafood meal very well!
So one afternoon Lion’s Head (adjacent to Table Mountain) was on fire, and while watching the helicopters fetching water from the ocean, I realized I felt like having fish for dinner!
Ocean Basket is a two-minute walk from my home within a small shopping centre, so off I went.
I have walked past the place hundreds of times without ever going in, but today was to be the day. “Sole” I thought, not having had sole for a while.
I was seated a table on the enclosed patio. The place was full, with a vibrant atmosphere, and people tucking into their meals.
My order arrived looking rather promising, but unfortunately a false promise. The sole was particularly bland. “Salt”, I thought, salt makes things better. That was another fail, so I tried dabbling with the various condiments on offer, but still no improvement!
The fries were ok, but nothing better than any fast food joint would have on offer though. The saving grace was the cheesecake I had for dessert. It was great, and I would have had as much as the restaurant could deliver.
Would I recommend Ocean Basket to friends and family? In short, no. There are many other venues that offer better quality at a better price.
