It’s rather a big claim to say that you make the best pizza in Mozambique but Mundo’s can pull it off. With thin, crispy bases and an unusual variety of toppings (including ones like pears, gorgonzola and pecan nuts, and ribs, pineapple, sweet chilli sauce and garlic) that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else in the country, it’s no wonder that pizza fans have been singing their praises for years.

Started as a hamburger stand fifteen years ago, Mundo’s is now a restaurant, pub and sports bar and one of Maputo’s most popular spots for businessmen, expats, locals and tourists alike. It’s unpretentious, friendly and always busy – on weekdays for business lunches and evenings and weekends for sport matches (big screen TVs screen all the soccer games). There’s a large restaurant area under thatch roof, an outdoor children’s play area, and a spacious bar area with tables on the terrace overlooking busy Julius Nyerere Avenue.

In addition to its three pages of pizza choices, Mundo’s has a large menu that extends from all-day breakfasts, wraps, burgers (try the bacon, brie and red currant one), popular spicy piri-piri chicken, a few seafood options and some meaty favourites such as German eisbein and the classic steak egg and chips.

This is not the restaurant to pick if you’re an oenophile – the wine list only has a few South African options (none of which are anything to write home about). Instead, opt for a local beer – 2M and Laurentina are both great – a flavoured vodka or one of the many inventive shooters if you’re having a bit of a party.

If you wouldn’t mind a bed along with your pizza and beer, Mundos also offers no-frills double en-suite rooms for an affordable rate.
