The staff were so friendly here that I would want to come back just to see them. Motherland Coffee Company is situated near the Company Gardens and a great place to pop into for lunch. I actually won a free coffee here which is what brought me to it in the first place, and thank goodness I won that prize because it was such a good place to discover. So much so that I very quickly went back with some friends to introduce them to yet another Cape Town gem.

The coffee comes in three sizes: small, tall and The Mother Cuppa. Their cappuccinos are amazing and it was impossible not to order another one immediately after the first. So perhaps I should have been smart and gone with the Mother Cuppa size to begin with. Another drink that is definitely worth trying is The Dictator which is a layering combination of condensed milk, double espresso, whipped cream and chocolate shavings. My friend had two and spent the whole day buzzing from the coffee and pure decadence of it all.

Their food menu is small but definitely worth trying. I had the Club Panini which came with chicken, tomato, bacon and cheese. Delicious and larger than I thought at only R48. The others at the table had the wraps, both the Pesto Chicken & Feta as well as the Hoi Sin Chicken & Cucumber. Also very reasonably priced.

I would go back here again and again, especially for the coffee which I’m told is a combination of Rwandan and Ethopian single origin Arabica blend. My friends would go back over and over for the Mother Cuppa. Go for yourself and decide. I have a feeling you’re going to love both.

At first glance it looks as though Motherland is another non-descript coffee clone. Located in an unassuming section of the Rosebank Mall, it’s rather plain on the outside. A few tables and some umbrellas is it.

But once you walk through the glass doors, it starts to show some character. You step down into the dining area, which creates the feeling that you’re retreating from the outside world. The coffee shop includes a recessed lounge with comfy couches and wooden tree stumps for coffee tables. You can sit for hours in this impromptu “coffice,” sipping java and surfing the free wi-fi.

The coffee itself is fair-trade sourced and sustainably produced in Rwanda and Ethiopia, in keeping with the “motherland” theme. The food items are mostly sourced from Africa, and acquired using Fair Trade practices.

The coffee menu is extensive, but the food menu is simple, with modest a selection of wraps, toasties, panini sandwiches and breakfast plates. The food is not stellar, but the emphasis here is on coffee, not food. My avocado, brie and bacon panini was hearty and filling, but nothing to write home about. My hot chocolate however, was rich and creamy, complemented by some cute latte art. A bonus is that you won’t have to wait long for your food or drinks, as the service is fast and efficient and the baristas are “meticulously” trained.

The funky interior, decent grub and libations, and location in the Rosebank Mall make this an ideal place to stop in for a quick shot of caffeine, or to just hide out for an hour or two when you’re tired from shopping. You’ll also feel good knowing you’re doing your part for fair trade, African development and social justice just by stopping in.
