Milestones is one of Kampala’s newest coffee shops, located directly opposite the brand new Acacia Mall on John Babiha Avenue. The mall, by the way, was still partly under construction when we were in town, but once it’s fully open it promises to be a great addition to the Kampala shopping and dining scene. There are three floors and it’s topped by a Century Cinemax movie theater that shows new releases.
Although it’s no more than fifteen footsteps from the doors of the mall, Milestones has a completely different vibe. A leafy terrace is shielded from the road by tall potted plants, and low, wooden beams frame the outdoor area. Tables are scattered around and there’s plenty of shade. It looked to us like a good spot for an afternoon coffee.
We wandered inside to take a look, and found a pastries counter selling oven-fresh croissants, cinnamon rolls, bread, cakes and other baked goods (mostly on the sweet side.) The servers were welcoming and friendly, and gave us a quick tour, pointing out the bookshelves on the wall beside the entrance. Most of the books for sale come under the umbrella of inspirational self-help titles, but there are a few novels among them. The wait staff were very enthusiastic about the books, and told us of their plans to stock more titles.
We’re looking forward to hearing how Milestones develops as business picks up at the Acacia Mall. As it is, it makes a nice stop for cake and coffee, and we hear there are plans to serve sandwiches and snacks too.
