Meloncino’s is situated on the second floor facing the outside of the mall at the V&A Waterfront and offers, like many other restaurants in the area, dreamy views. It features outside patio seating overlooking the railing, and an indoor dining area featuring a swanky interior of modern furniture, walls lined with wine bottles and numerous pieces of abstract art.

The food is typical of what you’d expect at an Italian restaurant, offering everything from pasta, to pizza, to gourmet sandwiches. Everything on the menu is also in Italian, but the descriptions are in English if you don’t know what they are. An extensive wine list compliments the long menu and features heavily on the reds. We started with the beef carpaccio, which while presented well, didn’t have any wow factor to it in terms of flavor. We both had individual pizzas, which seems to be what most of the other people in the restaurant were ordering as well. The margherita pizza came on the thick crust, while the Rustica came on the thin. If I had to choose again, I’d definitely go with the thick, which is more of a normal crust, while the thin was almost too thin to hold up all of the speck and pancetta on the rustica. The “thick” crust was also much tastier, especially the actual crust.

There are some photos of coffee advertising Meloncino’s house brand on the wall, so we were tempted to order and got a few of them as a post-meal drink. However, the coffee we were served looked nothing like the picture. The taste was good though, so there wasn’t that much to complain about.

Throughout the meal, the service seemed a bit pretentious at times, which was odd, considering the restaurant isn’t over-the-top fancy and fits nicely in with all the other themed restaurants in the area. We asked for indoor seats upon sitting, but had to sit outside. The hostess said the indoor tables were reserved, but after over an hour and a half of us eating outside, nobody showed up, and there were several tables still open.

Meloncino Roman Restaurant at the V&A Waterfront is quickly becoming the go-to place for pastas and pizzas in Cape Town Central. They also have a great bar that serves half-price cocktails daily between 4PM and 6PM. Stare out over the harbour and enjoy some delicious food, tasty cocktails and Roman-style seafood and grills. Although you might be lucky enough to find a table over the weekends, I would suggest booking before you go. The restaurant is upmarket, stylish and comfortable. Now let’s talk about the food!

For starters, I ordered the prosciutto crudo con rucola, pachino e scaglie di Parmigiano, which included shavings of Italian prosciutto ham served on a bed of fresh rocket, cherry tomato and slices of Parmesan cheese, drizzled with Italian extra-virgin olive oil. The portion was decent and it was a very fresh, tasty and simple dish. Very Italian and something you don’t get to enjoy often. I’d definitely recommend this one!

For mains, I ordered the gluten-free spaghetti carbonara with pancetta (Italian ham), egg, freshly cracked black pepper and pecorino cheese. The dish doesn’t include cream or mushroom like other carbonara pastas and it is stated on the menu. I was so happy they offer a healthy, tasty alternative to pasta, as gluten-free is a great way to stay healthy and still enjoy those delicious carbs. My pasta was absolutely excellent and I will definitely be going back to try out some of their other pasta dishes, as I’ve heard they’re just as mouth-watering!

For dessert, I just had to try the sorbetti misti, although their long list of delicious-sounding desserts was hard to choose from. When my sorbet arrived, it was presented beautifully and I couldn’t wait to tuck into my three seasonal flavours of sorbet. Light, refreshing and beautifully home-made, this was one dessert I won’t forget quickly!

Meloncino is situated upstairs in the V&A Waterfront, so if you sit on the tables outside you are offered the most beautiful view of both the harbour and Table Mountain. At Christmas there was a star on top of the mountain which lights up at night, and it made for a beautiful view. It was a gorgeous Cape Town evening when we went and because of this the whole place was very busy. We were unable to get an outside table so we sat inside, which ended up being great because the atmosphere inside is very warm and cosy. Very Italian.

We decided to get a starter for the table which was the Misto Di Montagna E Formaggi Misti. This was a selection of the finest imported Italian cold meats and cheese served with olives, cherry tomato, marinated artichokes and freshly baked focaccia bread. A wonderful start to the evening.

I had big plans to have a salad as a main, due to an ever-expanding waistline, but I was far too easily swayed by the amazing-sounding pastas on offer. So in the end I went for the Bucatini Con Pesto Di Melanzana E Pomodoro Dadolata. This was Bucatini Pasta (which I was told was their own homemade pasta, slightly thicker than normal spaghetti) served with a light home-made aubergine pesto and grated parmesan cheese, accompanied with sweet diced tomato. It was simple and delicious. Everyone else went for pastas and pizzas and the whole table was incredibly happy with their choices. The pizzas are done beautifully, proper Italian style.

The wine selection was quite pricey but I was able to find a nice affordable bottle which luckily was very good.

We had such an amazing waiter and I will definitely be back.
