The Maputo Waterfront Restaurant & Bar was my introduction to the Maputo restaurant scene.
I went on a windy October night and watched the lights across Maputo Bay while sipping on a glass of South African Boschendal Pavillion Rouge (180 metrical or $5.82).
I knew before I got there that my first Maputo meal was going to be prawns but there were
other really tempting options on the menu.
For example, Waterfront offers a daily lunch buffet that includes fish curry soup, filet
of fish with beetroot salsa, duck rice and grilled calamari steak.
My waiter recommended the seafood platter (960 metical or $31 — Maputo restaurants are
expensive) — with snapper, prawns, calamari and crayfish. He said the fish el Greco, pan
fried and wrapped in foil with feta, was also popular (560 metical or $18.09.)
Another favorite is the waterfront prawn curry.
But I held out for grilled prawns and my meal was totally satisfying. It included a side
salad, fries, bread rolls and breadsticks.
Joaquin Amorim, waterfront owner and manager, said the restaurant has a reputation for
good food and excellent service. South Africans, Portuguese and Mozambicans frequent it.
Busiest days are Fridays, Saturdays and Tuesdays. There’s dancing Saturdays.
