Maharajah Restaurant is situated just down a side road off Main Road. It is small and rather unassuming and probably not a place I would gravitate to immediately. However, what got me to go in was their greatest pulling card ever… smell. The smell that wafts out of the restaurant is amazing and pulled me right in.
Maharajah is a purely vegetarian cuisine offering some of India’s finest meals. They believe in promoting healthy vegetarian food and rely heavily of spices to provide the taste required, rather than the grease and oil you find in most other take away places. When I say take away I do so lightly because there is a lovely section inside for people to sit. However, there is something about the place that makes me view it more as take away then a sit down. While I waited I ordered some appetizers. I chose the Potato & Coriander Samosa, the Spinach & Paneer Samosa and some Chilli Bites. Delicious. I enjoyed the spinach one the most.
For main I decided on the Butter Bean Curry, which are described as Butter Beans Cooked Durban-Style. Durban is my original home town so I couldn’t resist. I chose medium heat. It was absolutely divine. I’m not sure I would call it Durban-Style which for me means it should be hot, but call it whatever you wish I was amazed at how tasty food could actually be without meat.
They have quite a big curry selection and also offer wraps, light meals, rice dishes, condiments, desserts and Indian drinks. On days that I find myself not in the mood to cook I would definitely come back for more. They are very reasonably priced too.
