If you fear your stomach may not be up for the stalls of the Djemaa el Fna, but you still want to be a part of the theatrics, take it all in from a safe distance by booking a top-floor table at Marrakshi, which has panoramic windows overlooking the square. Of all the tourist-trap terrace restaurants bordering the Djemaa, this one is undisputedly the best. Sure, the routine is more or less the same as everywhere else — fully tiled walls, overpriced tagines, belly dancers, and a bird’s-eye vantage point over the spectacle unfolding below — but here, the clichés come in an elevated form, and the food is actually really, really good (almost up there with the views). The glamorously appointed dining room, with its red-and-black stools and mod black chandeliers, resembles an upscale boudoir, and you might think that’s exactly where you’ve wound up for a moment when the sultry belly dancers begin their set. The flavorful, if scrawny, chicken skewers and nourishing harira soup will also capture your attention, but every so often, a glowing flare bursts up in the sky beyond the windows and catches your eye, reminding you of just where you are. By all means, enjoy the belly dancers and the food, but don’t let them distract you from the circus going on below. The Ringling Brothers had it all wrong: this is the greatest show on earth.
