How can you not love plush Khana Khazana? There’s a pretty garden, an upmarket vibe, crisp white tablecloths and lots and lots of delicious Indian food. We’ve lost track of the number of times that Khana Khazana has been recommended to us, so it’s clear that much of Kampala seems to feel the same way. In fact, Khana Khazana is widely regarded as the best Indian restaurant in Uganda.

The restaurant is spread out among a gorgeous green area that’s visited by colorful birds during the daytime and lit by standing lanterns after dark. There are usually fresh flowers on every table, and you can dine by candlelight at night. Whatever time of day you visit, this place always has a great atmosphere, making it popular on date night, as well as among colleagues and groups of friends.

Dishes run from about USh14,000 to USh80,000. You can expect to spend around USh50,000 per head; more if you’re ordering wine. Some say that’s too expensive, but the quality of the food is high. The menu is very extensive, covering well-known Indian dishes such as tikka masala, balti and biryani. Tandoori dishes are the specialty here, as well as Northern Indian cuisine. Vegetarians are well-catered for, with dishes such as paneer (springy Indian cheese) masala, baigan bharta – tandoori eggplant – and bhindi masala, made with okra. The naan breads, chapattis and roti breads are excellent.

Khana Khazana gets extra points for its excellent service. It isn’t always easy to find great service in Kampala, but the wait staff here are dressed lavishly (sometimes in Indian costume) and they take care of diners. The restaurant imports most of its spices from India, and you can request milder (or, if you’re feeling brave, hotter) versions of most dishes. And while service can be a little on the slow side during busy periods, diners certainly won’t be forgotten about.
