JBs Corner is literally located in the corner of Sandton City – sort of a last-chance eatery before heading out onto Rivonia Road and back home. And though the name implies a sort of homey diner, it’s nothing of the sort.

The décor is distinctly industrial-chic, with shiny black and silver metallic rails, tables, and beams criss-crossing the two-story dining area. Flats screen TVs and mirrors adorn the walls, and the music has a hard-rock edge to it. Perhaps as a sort of deliberate counterpoint, the main floor is punctuated by a massive table filled with cakes, lollipops and pastries, bursting with color and soft-edged sugary goodness.

But this isn’t a bakery. It’s got an all-purpose menu that appeals to the masses who visit the mall, with something for every palate. Sandwiches, tramezzini, salads, pizza, pasta, steaks, fish, curries and even the ubiquitous sushi selection (what is it about non-Asian restaurants all serving sushi these days?). For early risers, there’s also a nice-looking breakfast menu which includes Nutella French toast. (I must come back and try this!)

I ordered the salmon and avocado salad with cucumber, baby spinach and (?) which was beautifully presented, crisp and fresh. Not bad for a restaurant that’s really just upscale fast food! I also tried the chicken wings with a side of fries. The wings were OK, but I prefer them a little larger and jucier. For beverage I inhaled the berry yogurt smoothie, which was absolutely delicious and creamy, and came with the thickest straw I’ve ever seen. Alas, I did not have room to try one of the gorgeous cakes – maybe next time.

Next time I’ll also try to sit in the sunny upstairs dining area, which features floor-to-ceiling glass windows that can be opened to let the breeze in.
