Hudson’s is packed nearly every night, which says something for the quality of its pub grub and also its ambiance. The breezy corner joint on Main Road in Green Point does excellent burgers and sandwich fare along with a selection of pizzas and salads and BBQ ribs. Personally, I love The Ranch sandwich, which is done with a grilled peri peri chicken breast, onion rings and lettuce, but tastes best when you add avocado and cheese. But if you’d rather have beef there are both sandwich and burger options galore, along with plenty of other chicken choices. All the burgers and sandwiches come as either a single or a double – basically one or two patties, although the single patty was plenty of meat for me. Sides are served separately (at an extra price) and I recommend either the skinny fries or the sweet potato wedges. Prices here are quite fair, however, and the service is quick. If you want something lighter, check out the appetizer menu.
The space is quite large, although it fills quickly – you can expect a wait by 7pm on summer evenings, although reservations are taken. That said, the main bar area as well as the long row of plastic bar stools (with backs though) fronting the wooden bar that runs along the street facing windows, are first-come first-serve and perfect for solo diners or duos who don’t mind sharing elbow space.
Hudson’s serves a long list of beers and ciders on draft and in bottles. Besides the usual South African beer staples like Castle and Black Label, there are a selection of microbrews including Cape Town favorite Jack Black on draft. For something non-alcoholic, Hudson’s boasts a long milkshake menu featuring flavors like salted caramel, house made fudge and even Bar One or Nutella.

Hudsons Burger Joint quickly became everyone’s favourite place to grab a burger in Cape Town since it opened in 2009....
Hudsons Burger Joint quickly became everyone’s favourite place to grab a burger in Cape Town since it opened in 2009. They have a number of branches around Cape Town, and recently I visited the Claremont branch near Cavendish Square shopping mall. This was my very first visit to Hudsons apart from a few fantastic burgers I’ve enjoyed from their food stands at local music festivals in the past. The restaurant itself is modern, rustic and comes with a wonderful vibe. You’ll find people of all ages enjoying a burger at Hudsons, because they are just too good to deny.
Although the restaurant was busy, as it was a Saturday night, I was treated to great service and warm, friendly staff. They were screening a live rugby match which only added to the fun atmosphere. I started my meal with crumbed mushrooms served with sweet chili sauce. The mushrooms were crispy, flavoursome and served in a large portion which was quite filling. If you love crumbed mushrooms, you won’t be disappointed with the ones at Hudsons.
For mains, I ordered The Works burger with mustard mayo, tomato relish, cheddar cheese, cos lettuce, red onion, dill pickle as well as extra avo and bacon. The great thing about Hudsons is the amount of choices you get. Create your own burger, choose your own side and get exactly what you’re in the mood for. I also ordered sweet potato wedges to go with my burger. My burger was juicy, tasty and came with wonderful layers of flavour and fresh, delicious toppings. The sweet potato wedges were OK, but I would rather recommend the fries.
For dessert, I had to try the deep-fried Oreos, as I’d never seen it on the menu anywhere else before. This dessert comes with four deep fried Oreos covered in icing sugar, and is ideal for any cookie lover. They literally tasted like a donut with a warm Oreo inside. Absolute heaven!
