Hong Sushi was one of my first introductions to Sushi in Cape Town. I remember thinking it was nice, but not amazing. Two years later and I found myself there again and my thoughts were pretty much the same. I’ve certainly had worse but I’ve definitely had better. Having said that, I think I went with quite low expectations and the sushi was better than I thought it would be. It is, however, quite well priced which makes a welcome change from some of the other sushi restaurants in Cape Town.

The place itself is not that great. Well, the restaurant is fine. It’s clean and authentic looking. But it’s hidden inside Stadium on Main, a rather sad looking mall in Claremont. The atmosphere in this mall is not good and it feels as if there is no life to this place. Perhaps Hong Sushi would just feel better if it was somewhere else as I think this actually puts a bit of a damper to it.

The food wasn’t bad though and I enjoyed a nice platter of sushi. I always judge a sushi restaurant by their salmon roses and I was pleasantly surprised. One of my favourites was definitely the Cucumber Roll which was prawn, salmon, tuna and avocado wrapped in cucumber and topped with caviar and Japanese mayonnaise. I enjoy having options without rice so this was a nice addition to my meal.

Overall, the place isn’t amazing, but their food isn’t bad and if the atmosphere could perhaps be a bit livelier I would go back.
