The first thing I noticed when I sat down at Gwefey is that a lot of the customers were Asian. Figuring that Asians would not frequent a bad Asian restaurant if they had a choice, I took this as a good sign, and it turns out I was right.
The second thing I noticed was the colorful decor and menu. The menu appears to have been created by a professional graphic designer, and is a fun departure from the standard bland line-item menus you see in most other restaurants. Although Gwefey offers a variety of Pan-Asian dishes such as flatbread (gui kui) sandwiches, fried rices, soups, sushi, and Asian-themed salads, they specialize in dim sum, noodles and tea, so I tried one of each and wasn’t disappointed.
Of the various exotic tea choices, I opted for the goji berry chrysanthemum, which had just the right amount of flavor. It was served in a stylish clear teapot, which highlighted the lovely red color. My steamed dumplings came out in a round bamboo steamer and were tender, juicy and plump. For mains I chose the braised beef flank soup noodles, made from home-made hand-pulled noodles. The bowl was huge and hearty and the combination of flavors truly delicious and filling.
Service was prompt and the prices were reasonable (for a mall restaurant). I look forward to going back and tackling more of the menu, particularly the Shanghai BBQ pork ribs and the Indian pancakes. I was also intrigued by the Asian-inspired breakfast items such as the eggs Benedict (on an Asian bun and drizzled with ginger-lime Hollandaise sauce) and the goji berry flapjack.
Definitely worth stopping in at for a tasty meal before, during or after work.
