From time to time I find myself in the V & A Waterfront, a busy tourist trap I try avoid. But it has everything one could need, so I find myself there more often than I would prefer. While dashing back and forth one day, I passed Gibson’s Burgers & Ribs twice. On both occasions I saw meals on tables that looked pretty good.
When I finished my running about, I decided to get something to eat and headed back to Gibsons.
I was lucky to get there after lunchtime, so there were tables available and service was unrushed.
Burger or ribs, burger or ribs — I couldn’t decide. Given my messy history with ribs and their sauce, coupled with the fact that I had a few more errands to run, I figured a burger would be the safer option. The menu options are extensive. I chose the Wharton, a cheeseburger served with a side of black mushroom sauce. The burgers are also served with fries or baked potato.
My meal arrived — the quintessential classic burger, a burger the way they are meant to be. Gibson’s is one of the few places in the city that offers a choice of rare, medium or well done. I chose medium.
Everything on my plate was good. The patty was juicy, tasty and tender. The tomato and lettuce was garden fresh and crisp, and the fries done to perfection: crispy on the outside, soft and tender within. The mushroom sauce was a winner. Certainly not the best burger in town, but for its price, difficult to beat.
Gibson’s is known for its regular Monday lunch special – two burgers for the price of one, only the more expensive burger is charged for. That is an offer that cannot be bettered anywhere in the city.
I will be back for those ribs.

Gibson’s may serve a variety of grills, and ribs are definitely a speciality of theirs, but their burgers are not-to-be-missed if you’re looking for a quick meal while cruising the V&A Waterfront. I stopped by Gibson’s on a Friday night just before 9 PM to find a small queue forming outside. The hostess said it’d be a 15-minute wait and offered me some complimentary wine to enjoy while I waited. After about 10 minutes, a table was ready for me and I already had my eye on one of their gourmet burgers that was advertised.
For starters, I thought I’d try the sticky pork ribs, which were a choice of export pork or beef ribs grilled in BBQ sauce. When my starter arrived it was exactly what I expected and tasted great. The portion was decent for a starter and the ribs were served in bite-size pieces, perfect for eating them at a restaurant. I would definitely recommend getting ribs from Gibson’s as a starter or main, depending on what you’re in the mood for. Either way, they are sticky, sweet but not too sweet, and have great Asian flavour with sesame seeds.
For the main event, I ordered the Ultimate Mex-Tex burger which came with cheddar cheese, jalapenos, guacamole, sour cream, salsa and a side of nachos. If you love nachos like I do and you want to try a nacho-burger hybrid, this is the one to try! It tastes exactly like what you would imagine and it’s absolutely delicious! It’s also served with a choice of fries, sweet potato fries or a baked potato. I ordered the sweet potato fries as they’re hard to find in Cape Town. All in all, it was a wonderful meal in under an hour and after a long day of shopping, that’s exactly what I needed!
