This refined-yet-relaxed restaurant manages to produce top-notch fish dishes in a sophisticated environment, while still feeling like a neighborhood fish house.
Located on Thrupp square in the heart of Rosebank, the sprawling premises occupy much of the ground floor of the building, and include a large indoor dining area plus plenty of outdoor seating. The casually elegant decor comprises crisp white linen tablecloths, warm wooden chairs, soft lighting and carved wood panels bordering the ceiling. But it’s definitely not stuffy — the din from the busy kitchen is evident in the main dining area, and children are not only welcome, but encouraged.
Specialities include Mozambican queen prawns, calamari, and kingklip, which you can order a la carte or as part of combo platters. We opted for the latter, and were impressed with the tender calamari and juicy prawns, but not so much with the dull kingklip, which was the weakest link of the three. Our appetizer of mussels in creamy garlic-wine sauce was a standout though, and we used the leftover sauce to dress up the fish a bit.
Other dishes which will have to wait for another day include the lobster bisque, seared Scottish salmon, kingklip thermidor, seafood casserole, and langoustines. The menu has a strong bias toward Mozambican-Portuguese preparations and flavorings, including peri peri, bacalhau (Portuguese cod), and beef espatada (which is included among the non-seafood offerings).
The artisanal bread and prompt service rounded out a lovely evening — though this is a large, high volume restaurant with at least 25 employees on hand to cater to the number of guests, we never had to wait more than five minutes to get something we ordered, and we never felt rushed or crowded.
