It’s odd enough to find a spot in the medina that could be called “sexy” — and all the more disorienting when you step in and realize there’s nary an arch or bronze lantern in sight. But despite its New York vibe, Fez Lounge’s name says it all. The pint-size restaurant’s dark walls, dim lighting, and soft leather banquettes impart a cozy feel, and the pleasant music flows seamlessly from jazz to Indian. The menu serves the requisite couscous, pastilla, and briouates (spring rolls stuffed with fish, cheese, or meat), but also has a solid brownie with ice cream. The tabouleh salad with couscous and chicken is intriguing in theory, but the execution falters: while the chunks of chicken are indeed flavorful, they’ve been dried out a bit too much to be really enjoyable. Still, it’s hard not to appreciate the efforts of the sweet lady and son who run the joint, with their hesitant English and warm smiles.

If you really want to escape the medina for a few hours, head straight to the back where a plush, inviting daybed awaits. Order a shisha, sip on some mint tea, and doze off for a few, if you must. This is just the respite you’ve been looking for.
