Deluxe Coffeeworks is known throughout Cape Town as the place to go to get some quality, delicious coffee. They have 4 stores in Cape Town including the one on Metal Lane, just at the bottom of Kloof Street. When I visited the branch on a warm, summer afternoon, the store was empty and the barista behind the counter didn’t even lift his head when I entered the store. As I didn’t see a menu anywhere, I asked the barista what they offered, he replied with a blank stare so I just asked for a cappuccino to end the unpleasantness I was experiencing as soon as possible. I asked if they had sweetener and he said “no”. Then I asked if they did Iced Coffee because it was such a hot day, and he replied again “no”. With no menu, and no suggestions or cooperation from the barista, I felt completely unwelcome and judged at Deluxe Coffeeworks. I couldn’t wait to get out of there, and I’m sure the other people who stop by to enjoy have experienced the exact same bad attitude and service as I have!
The store itself is extremely dark and dingy and although its décor is very cool and hip with dark wood and gold assets, I felt very unwelcome in the café and couldn’t wait to get out of there. My cappuccino cost R14 and was actually very delicious. Their coffee is sold all over Cape Town, so you know it’s good and people often buy Deluxe Coffee to make and enjoy at home, it’s that good! With service like that, it’s best to buy a bag and make it yourself to avoid being treated so rudely by the baristas at Deluxe Coffeeworks, Kloof Street.
This is one branch of many, so I would advise going on to their website to see if there is one close to you.
Deluxe Coffeeworks is another one of those places that always comes up when you’re looking for the top coffee spots in Cape Town. It has everything that you want from a coffee shop, with the most important element being that the coffee is amazing. It’s one of the best Flat White’s I’ve ever had, which let’s face it most people get incredibly wrong.
My husband has the pleasure of working for a company that loves good coffee and with people who take it very seriously. With a top of the range coffee machine he is now finding himself making cappuccinos everyday rather than just switching on the kettle. He asked where they got their coffee from and the answer was, ‘well obviously Deluxe’.
I urged him to take me and ended up having, what I immediately posted onto Twitter, a coffee-gasm. Yeah these guys know what they are talking about.
I asked the owners to tell me about more about the place, and this is what they had to say:
Deluxe Coffeworks was the brain child of, or rather the search for, a good cup of coffee. Judd Francis and Carl Wessel met each other over a couple of drinks in a local bar and realised they shared the same interest in business and coffee. Putting their money where their mouths are they pulled their resources and acquired a small 5kg roaster. They started roasting coffee and blending in Carl’s backyard until they had a blend they were happy presenting to the world. Judd being in the coffee industry for quite some time brings years of coffee industry knowledge that has set Deluxe apart from other roasteries and coffee shops in the almost four years it has been open.
They supply a large number of coffee shops, restaurants, offices and home users all across the Western Cape and Gauteng. They are also one of the most affordable places to buy coffee beans for home!
