The warm glow emanating from inside the doors of this renovated Victorian beauty beckons one inside with the promise of atmosphere and upmarket cuisine. I was fortunate enough to experience De Companjie with a large group, fitting perfectly into the private dining room, where we were spoilt with attentive service. The restaurant, which is housed in an historical cottage along Swellendam’s main drag, is filled with collectibles and treasures gathered by someone who clearly takes pride in the look and feel of the restaurant. Carefully positioned weathered vintage books, beaten vessels, antique plates and furniture are scattered around this old, converted home. A fire burns in the main dining area and candles flicker as staff seat diners.

One look at the menu and I knew we were in for a treat. Starters ranged from soups made from seasonal ingredients, to fresh salads and richer options. I decided on Kudu for mains, while my fellow diners ordered gourmet burgers and steaks named ‘The Beast’ or something equally as robust. My kudu was prepared to succulent perfection, while my friend remarked that his burger was so good that he felt quite bashful eating it, as though it ought to be a secret.

Well, De Companjie shouldn’t be a secret, as it ranks as one of the best dinners I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying in the Overberg. Every touch was thoughtful (down to digestifs served in pretty vintage tea cups), and the wine list was filled with wonderful offerings from the region – which is totally underrated – pairing perfectly with each morsel.

I imagine breakfasts and lunches served at this restaurant are equally as impressive and I highly recommend De Companjie to anyone visiting Swellendam. Tip: reserve the private dining room for a large party.
