With black and white illustrations hung on exposed brick walls, mirrors in weathered frames, mismatched vintage furniture and a corkboard full of Instagram snaps and drawings, Daleahs feels like the whimsically stylish pad of an artist – with the addition of friendly waiters, tables of cute hipsters and creative types working away on their MacBooks.
Located in trendy Braamfontein, a hip, student-y area on the edge of the CBD, Daleahs is a casual owner-run eatery and coffee shop that offers fresh juices, all-day breakfasts such as flapjacks and bacon and “oats not for goats”, sandwiches (try the beef fillet one with olives, feta, tomato and rocket), some classic pastas and salads on a chalkboard menu. The best thing to eat here, however, is the sliders – two mini burgers (choose from chicken, beef and mushroom) served with mushroom and red onion sauce and fat chips. Even though Daleahs only opened a few months ago, their sliders are already being rated as Joburg’s best burgers.
Each day there’s a different choice of sweets – which are nostalgically childhood influenced, from choc-chip cookies to chocolate peanut butter cake. All are great for accompanying a coffee or one of the specialty teas.
Currently Daleahs closes at 5pm, but they’re in the process of applying for a liquor license and plan to stay open later – it’s sure to be as popular a place for drinks in the evening as it is for breakfast and lunches.
