Clarkes on Bree Street is the place to be if you’re a cool, young creative in Cape Town. They serve craft beer, American favourites and all-day breakfast. Unfortunately, Clarkes seems to be all talk and no game, as I was highly unimpressed with the service, food and prices at Clarkes. The simplistic décor and outside sidewalk seating area is a great place to share a beer with friends after work, but other than that, I’d say give Clarkes a miss!
To kick things off, I ordered a freshly squeezed OJ and cappuccino. While I was still waiting for my drinks, I ordered the Man Breakfast and Mac & Cheese with extra bacon, as those were recommended to me as their most popular dishes. My food arrived long before my drinks and although the Mac & Cheese was tasty, it was a very small portion and very rich. The cost for extra bacon was also very overpriced. My Man Breakfast was barely enough to feed a small child. It was simple and the ingredients used seemed to be of a very low quality. I was highly disappointed with this very expensive breakfast.
When my drinks finally arrived (as I finished the last bite of my meal), the cappuccino was way too strong and the OJ tasted like it was poured straight out of a bottle instead of being freshly squeezed. What a big disappointment at Clarkes! You’ll find the busiest times at Clarkes are after work when young professionals grab a beer and some low quality overpriced food, just because they are hungry and it’s convenient. Step up your game, Clarkes! You’re making Cape Town look back.
