Chalk & Cork. I never heard of it until a friend called me to meet up for breakfast. I parked a little up the road from the restaurant and walked back to it. On approaching I noticed it had an outside courtyard with a pair of huge oak trees taking pride of place. We chose to sit in the courtyard.
Wow, there is something special about sitting in the shade of old oak trees with a gentle cool morning breeze keeping one cool. I could have happily spent hours and hours there.
Our waiter was great, without doubt one of the best I have experienced — very easy going and highly attentive without constantly hovering around the table. The drink I chose was the fresh orange juice. A really big glass of icy fresh orange juice promptly arrived.
For a meal I asked him for a recommendation. That was the Morning Bruschetta: a poached egg (I got two) with Portobello mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes served on bruschetta topped with Parmesan cheese.
I tucked in. The perfect meal in the perfect setting, without doubt the best breakfast I have had in Cape Town.
Summer evenings can only be blissful at Chalk and Cork with a Tapas menu on offer. I will be going back within the month to have dinner.
If you are after a good breakfast at a reasonable price in a great relaxed venue with impeccable service, this is the place to visit. Street parking is very limited, but the Lifestyle shopping centre diagonally across the road has a parking garage. Cape Town’s “My Citi” rapid transport bus service runs past the restaurant with a stop less than a two-minute walk from the entrance.
