This German import on Green Point’s busy main drag is one of my favorite places for a laid back drink on the patio and just to people watch. It’s often not as busy as the other restaurants on this strip, so you can get a seat right up against the road. (They also have Wi-Fi, should you be dining alone and want to log on.)
The space is big and chic with seating both on the long patio and inside at wood and marble tables and leather benches — when the weather is nice the doors are slid wide open, blurring the line between indoors and out. The food here isn’t anything special: it is pretty standard global pub grub. Although for breakfast I thought it wasn’t bad if you’re just looking for an affordable egg and meat hangover cure for instance — they also have a decent weekend breakfast buffet that features a lot of cheese and bread choices, something I’m always excited about.
For lunch you can choose from a variety of different wraps and pitas plus build your own salad choices, all of which are quite affordable. Pizza, pasta, burgers and some surf and turf platters round out much of the rest of the menu. Oh and if you’re craving German, the last page is dedicated to German specialties including two schnitzels. The wraps are pretty good and the pizza, while slightly greasy, is also pretty tasty.
Where the Extrablatt really shines, however, is during happy hour, when all cocktails go for just R25 from 5pm to 8pm Monday to Friday. The cocktail menu here is also quite extensive.

I’m a bit confused about this place. Café Extrablatt is located in Green Point’s Main Road and because it is right next to the stadium and on a very busy road it is always full. It’s not a small restaurant at all and yet manages to fill its tables every night. I had a look at their website and noticed a very large menu offering a huge selection of different food items. Why I’m confused is the evening I went we were given a one-page menu with a very small selection. Our menu had been freshly printed and the ink had obviously started to run low, so we could barely read what was on offer. I wasn’t too impressed. I’ve seen amazing reviews for this place though, and I’m wondering if we weren’t just given a small menu because there was a huge concert on at the stadium the same night. Perhaps they knew there would be a big demand and they decided to keep it simple. I’m not sure.
Anyway, I was one of the people going to the concert and decided to come here to get something in my stomach, as I knew it was going to be a long night of standing. I ordered the Conzales Wrap which was lettuce, tomato, avocado, bacon and feta. My husband when for the bacon burger and chips. I did not enjoy my wrap at all, and couldn’t even finish it. Unfortunately it was drenched in some sauce that I didn’t like which meant I couldn’t even taste the ingredients inside. My husband’s burger, however, was absolutely amazing. The patty was incredible and just so soft and juicy. He was very impressed with his.
I might have to give this place another try, just because I have heard good reviews and because the burger was very good. Judging on first impressions though, I wasn’t too happy, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and try again.
